DEBATE: Will Elin Nordegren Divorce Tiger Woods Because of His Cheating?

This look symbolizes how Tiger must be feeling after being caught cheating on Elin Nordegren

By now unless you are blind, deaf and have no friends, you have heard that Tiger Woods, the world’s #1 golfer and arguably the best golfer of all time was recently caught cheating on his wife Elin Nordegren.  There doesn’t seem to much dispute about whether or not he committed adultery, although how much adultery remains in question as woman after woman comes out of the woodwork to add to Tiger’s list of “transgressions“.

You know we here at U Say, I Say would have something to say about this, especially considering how much attention our Steve McNair debate generated.

So in light of the degree of the transgressions committed by Tiger, Sital and Adam debate the following question:

Will Elin Nordegren divorce Tiger Woods because of his cheating?

So read both Adam and Sital’s takes below, then log your vote.  We’ll send out the results in about two weeks time.

Sital A. says:

I'm torn.  After my tirade on Steve McNair, all of you know how I feelabout cheaters and infidelity.  I think she *should* divorce him.

Like McNair, Woods' wandering penis has made a mockery of his marriage and embarrassed his entire family.  He'll do it again, no question.  I can think of all kinds of reasons why she shouldn't stay - for example, what kind of role model would she be for her daughter? So why stay in the marriage?

Cuz now it's business. $$$ According to tabloid reports, Elin is getting an immediate $5 million dollars and she's renegotiating her reported $20 million dollar prenup into a $70-80 million dollar deal over a shorter period of marriage.  She's got two children with Tiger (each worth $250K in child support per year) and she's a former nanny and part-time model.  She doesn't seem to have career aspirations and unlike many other celebrity wives who have QVC jewelry lines, HSN make- up, reality shows, etc. she hasn't parlayed her fame-by-marriage into much.  Elin, for the most part, has lead a quiet life as a wife and mother.  She has good financial reasons for sticking it out with Tiger and let's be honest, she's in the driver's seat.  She has a window of opportunity to get herself set up for life on easy street, in style.

She's also young, so spending another 5-7 years with Tiger isn't such a bad idea.  They could come to an "arrangement" where he gets to prowl as long he's quiet about it and she puts on a happy face in public to keep his endorsers happy, as long as she gets paid in the end.  If they divorce later, she'd still be in her mid-late 30s, a hot cougar with A LOT of money.  It's not a bad business arrangement, actually her "profit" is better than any business case I've seen recently.

There's also a certain social-status bestowed upon Mrs. Tiger Woods that I don't think will translate over to an ex-Mrs. Woods.  I'm sure there's a lifestyle that she's accustomed to, there's a certain way that she's treated by people around her and it's a life that she wants to maintain for herself & her children.

There's another really BIG reason she won't divorce him:  she loves him.  *shudder!*  She really seems to.  If she didn't love him, I don't think she would have gone after her husband with a 3-iron. That kind of rage is the result of deep, deep anguish and pain.  I think she's going to give the guy a second chance.  They're in counseling, they have kids together, so she's going to try to make the best of it.  I don't agree with it, but I'm also not in her position.  I don't have it in me to give a guy a second chance for transgressions like these.  I couldn't stand the humiliation, but I don't have children or $80 million staring me in the face either- it makes the decision to divorce, that much more difficult.

So there's no way that Elin will divorce Tiger, but 5 years from now, after the prenup matures...that's a debate for another day.

Adam R-Z Says:

Based on what we know about Elin from the press (and what several guys at the local bar probably know by now - you know she's gotten some random lovin as revenge by now), I would have to say that without a doubt she will be divorcing Tiger Woods.

I have to admit I haven't done much research on Ms. Nordegren (see how I'm already not calling her Mrs. Woods?), but here is what I do know:

According to reports/rumors she busted out the back window of an Escalade and drug a 6'1" 185lb supergolfer over two rows of seats after his car accident.  Think about that for a sec.  THAT'S CRAZY!  She would have to be a very strong and passionate person to commit an act of such super-human strength.  Escalades are big vehicles and 185lbs of dead weight (according to reports he was in and out of conciousness) is a LOT to move.  This is no ordinary, straight thinking woman.  She acts rashly and out of emotion.

Now I know what you're thinking: I'm not buying that whole broke-the-glass-to-free-him-from-the-SUV story.  And I don't blame you.  So let's take the other possible reason she went all Barry Bonds (theres a steroid pun in there somewhere) on the back of the Escalade...

SHE'S CRAZY.

She's went nuts when she found out he was getting more butt than ashtrays and took a 9 iron to his rig.

Either way she is clearly an emotional, strong-willed (and strong muscled) woman.  It's due to this strength and explosiveness I cannot see her staying in this marriage.  She is undoubtedly humiliated by what's transpired and unlike other high profile cases, I can't see a woman with this type of rage containing herself at public events.

It also pays to keep in mind that this is different than the Kobe Bryants, Bill Clintons, Steve McNairs & David Lettermans of the world:  This wasn't one woman that Tiger slipped up with on a drunken night.  He's had close to a dozen affairs, many lasting over 6 months (in some cases almost 3 years!) and he clearly is a deeply troubled man.  You just can't shake that off, I don't care how big of a ring Tiger buys her.

She's too proud & too strong to stand by his side on this one.  She's divorcing him.

It’s not whether she is gonna divorce him or not. It’s whether she’s gonna make him quit golf. That’s the only thing that could potentially redeem him in the public’s eye as well.

I think this is a really good idea. To abstract it out: If you are a man or woman and you are doing things that put your relationship in jeopardy taking a step back from those things for a period of time makes sense.

I’m not saying that playing golf makes Tiger sniff around (pun intended) but I would agree that not playing golf would force him to focus on other things, like his family life.

With that said, can you really imagine Tiger quitting golf?? I could see taking a year off – a hiatus to “get his priorities straight” but quitting altogether? I don’t see that happening.

      • Sital Amin says:

That’s a good point – do you remove yourself from the temptation? He should, but he won’t. I don’t see him quitting golf – he’s got that elusive Jack Nicklaus 18 staring him in the face.

If it was a choice between winning 5 more majors (he has 14, 5 more and he would surpass Nicklaus) and his marriage to Elin, I think he’s gonna pick golf. Sad, but very true.

If i was tiger woods i would save my marriage and go to counselling. Elin knows its good business to stick in the marriage. He got to be man enough to make it work or move forward. He will not quit golf.. This close on beating the golden bear and becoming elite golf. I don’t think so. He should have sticked with he and been a good man. He has two kids..
